Round 6, Pick No. 221 Overall (Compensatory): 49ers select C Doug Kramer, Illinois

Remember that part about Alex Mack still undecided about possibly retiring? Yeah, that’s a big concern. It’s possible the 49ers see three-fifths of their offensive line completely different than last year’s starting cast, arguably more if there’s a change at right guard over Daniel Brunskill, and/or Mike McGlinchey isn’t back at right tackle.

Even if Mack does return, it would be wise to both find depth right now while hopefully landing someone to eventually replace the soon-to-be 37-year-old multi-year Pro Bowler when he does end up retiring.

Currently, the Niners employ Jake Brendel as Mack’s primary backup, and Brunskill has filled those shoes before, too.

However, the 6-foot-2, 299-pound Doug Kramer out of Illinois is a good reserve option here despite his relatively smallish stature.

In a zone scheme, Kramer moves well and has a low pad level, even though he can be overpowered by bigger interior rushers.

San Francisco isn’t looking for a day-one starter, though.
