Round 1, Pick No. 13 Overall (from Houston): 49ers select CB Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner

Just because you trade away your superstar receiver for draft picks doesn’t mean that your first pick should be spent filling that void.

This isn’t the first time I’ve mocked Cincinnati cornerback Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner to San Francisco. Everything about this pick makes perfect sense. With him on the field you’ll get two things: lockdown coverage and a high-turnover probability.

In three years with the Bearcats, Sauce never allowed a touchdown. In his junior year of play alone, he held all competition to 131 yards in 14 total games.

He’s the poster-child for man-to-man coverage, and the reason that an unproven secondary in San Francisco can be successful. He’ll not only lock down his side of the field, he’ll make the front seven better allowing more quarterback pressures.
