No. 1: 49ers need to get Trey Lance a deep threat

The Niners already have two top-quality wide receivers in Brandon Aiyuk and the All-Pro, Deebo Samuel, and both figure to play massive roles in Trey Lance’s maturation.

However, and especially after so many wideouts blazed their 40-yard times at the NFL Scouting Combine this year, San Francisco should still look at reinforcing the back end of the depth chart at this position despite grabbing two C-level receivers in Malik Turner and Marcus Johnson, both of whom have speed and can double on special teams.

Still, the 49ers should easily be attracted to some of the faster wide receivers in this year’s NFL Draft.

Check out some of these 40-yard times from the combine:

  • Tyquan Thornton, Baylor: 4.28 seconds
  • Velus Jones, Tennessee: 4.31 seconds
  • Calvin Austin III, Memphis: 4.32 seconds
  • Danny Gray, SMU: 4.33 seconds
  • Bo Melton, Rutgers: 4.34 seconds
  • Christian Watson, North Dakota State: 4.36 seconds

For the uninformed, those are awfully fast times.

Lance has a strong arm and can take advantage of down-the-field threats, unlike his predecessor, Jimmy Garoppolo. Even if the Niners take a flier on a speedy wideout to use solely as a gadget weapon, that’d benefit Lance in multiple ways.

Plus, Kyle Shanahan loves speed, right?
