Round 6, Pick No. 220 Overall (Compensatory): Trey Lance has 49ers select EDGE Carson Wells, Colorado

San Francisco has focused a good deal of attention on reinforcing one side of the trenches, the offensive line, but it has yet to make a sizable impact on the defense.

Particularly in the pass-rush department.

The 49ers already have a prolific edge rusher in Nick Bosa, who’ll cornerstone their defensive line this upcoming season. Yet the depth behind him remains a myriad of castoffs and rotational pieces.

Adding Colorado EDGE Carson Wells doesn’t necessarily alleviate that problem, but it does help push those depth pieces towards being a more impactful bunch, particularly if the 6-foot-4, 250-pounder can replicate his 6.5-sack campaign over six games in 2020.

Having managed 5.5 sacks in 12 games a year ago, to go along with 13.5 tackles for a loss, the Niners could look to Wells as another situational pass-rusher and occasional strong-side linebacker in base-down formations.

If anything, Wells’ ability to contribute on special teams might help Trey Lance and the offense achieve better field position on a drive-to-drive basis.
