Round 5, Pick No. 172 Overall: Trey Lance has 49ers select OL Cordell Volson, North Dakota State

What, you thought Christian Watson would be the only NDSU player Trey Lance would want on his roster?

No, of course not.

San Francisco already added Luke Fortner to reinforce the interior of the offensive line, but there’s still a need for more depth and someone who could potentially fill in as a swing tackle, supporting both right tackle Mike McGlinchey and All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams.

Sure, NDSU tackle Cordell Volson might project more as a guard at the NFL level. But like Watson, he’s well aware of Lance’s tendencies as a pro and plays with enough physicality to make up for some of his other shortcomings.

Volson probably projects as a high-quality backup at best, but last year’s depth issues along the entire O-line revealed the 49ers could afford to spend some day-three draft capital to ensure it’s not a problem going forward.

And the two would certainly embrace being on the same team again.
