Round 1, Pick No. 48 Overall (from Bears): Trey Lance has 49ers select WR Christian Watson, North Dakota State

Ah, yes. A trade to kick off the Niners’ moves in the 2022 NFL Draft. And what better thing than to reunite Trey Lance with his former teammate at North Dakota State, wide receiver Christian Watson.

Watson, 6-foot-4 and 208 pounds, won’t fall to San Francisco at No. 61 overall. Not after he wowed at the Senior Bowl and then impressed at the NFL Scouting Combine, running a blazing-fast 4.36 40-yard time and posting 136 inches in the broad jump.

So, what San Francisco has to do here is engineer a trade, moving up to No. 48 overall in a deal with the Chicago Bears:

Yes, that’s all it took in our Pro Football Focus mock-draft tool.

Watson, who had 800 receiving yards and seven touchdowns on 43 catches last season, already stems from an offense the 49ers were intrigued by when they landed Lance a year ago. And it’s rare to see a player of Watson’s size have such commanding speed.

With Watson now in tow, the Niners will support Lance with three top-quality receivers in Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk and the rookie.
