Round 6, Pick No. 221 Overall (Compensatory): 49ers select WR Johnny Johnson III, Oregon

There aren’t too many high-profile wide receivers out of the Pac-12 who’d be at the 49ers’ disposal in the NFL Draft, at least not in easy draftable range.

Still, that doesn’t mean the Niners should avoid the position altogether.

Oregon wide receiver Johnny Johnson III isn’t going to win any footraces, and he does come with a bit of an injury history, which limited him to nine games in 2021.

But the 6-foot-1, 199-pound receiver does have the potential of being a big-slot option, which is something Kyle Shanahan has used before in his offense. And while San Francisco already has four of its possible six wide receiver spots allocated to Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, Jauan Jennings and Ray-Ray McCloud, bolstering the depth and adding someone who can also serve on special teams would be a wise move.

If anything, Johnson could be the player tasked with pushing Jennings even further than the latter’s impressive sophomore campaign for the 49ers a year ago.
