Round 6, Pick No. 220 Overall (Compensatory): 49ers select EDGE Carson Wells, Colorado

There are a lot of good outside pass-rushers in this year’s NFL Draft. And while we shouldn’t even consider lumping Colorado EDGE Carson Wells into that mix, he might be a decent find late in the draft who could turn into a rotational presence in certain situations.

At 6-foot-4 and 250 pounds, Wells is a bit undersized for anything more than speed-rushing work. However, he was notably productive during his last two seasons with the Buffaloes, accumulating a total of 12 sacks and 29.5 tackles for a loss during that span.

In addition to situational pass-rushing work, Wells is versatile enough to play a strong-side linebacker role, too, giving him a little more flexibility to assist with the Niners’ defensive depth.

Sure, San Francisco would ideally want a high-quality EDGE to pair with their Pro Bowler, Nick Bosa, on a three-down basis.

At this stage of the draft, though, one can think more about getting versatility and depth instead.
