NFL Draft 2022: 5 predictions for 49ers second-round pick
By Peter Panacy
49ers prediction No. 3: CB Roger McCreary, Auburn
Yes, the 49ers largely solved their cornerback needs this offseason by bringing aboard former Kansas City Chiefs corner Charvarius Ward to become the automated CB1 on the depth chart.
In theory, this move pushes Emmanuel Moseley and Ambry Thomas into the other two spots, Moseley bumping inside to nickel in three-wide formations.
However, the Niners may not be completely done adding corners to their roster, and it wouldn’t be shocking at all to see them go after Auburn cornerback Roger McCreary if he’s still on the board at No. 61 overall.
McCreary, 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds, doesn’t let his relative lack of size get in the way of his efforts. He’s physical and has some of the proverbial “dog” in him, particularly with the way he uses his hands which helped him break up 14 passes for the Tigers last season.
And while San Francisco previously preferred big-bodied zone-style corners, a shift to more press-man coverage with smaller-sized defensive backs has become the team’s trend in more recent years.
A perfect fit for McCreary, and he’d be a quality addition if he winds up being the Round 2 selection.
