Round 7, Pick No. 259 Overall (Compensatory): 49ers select RB Abram Smith, Baylor

San Francisco is aiming to find yet another hidden-gem running back very late in the NFL Draft after doing so in 2021 with sixth-round draftee Elijah Mitchell, right?

It’s not like there’s a lack of a need. Mitchell suffered multiple injuries that forced him to miss six games, the 49ers’ No. 1 running back Raheem Mostert is poised for free agency, as is fellow veteran Jeff Wilson Jr., while second-year pro Trey Sermon failed to make much of a dent his rookie season.

If anything, the Niners need to add to the depth chart, and Baylor running back Abram Smith surely impressed his final year in college with 1,601 rush yards on 257 carries for 12 touchdowns.

The 6-foot, 213-pound prospect is a zone-style runner, tailored to what Kyle Shanahan will want to do, although Smith’s speed isn’t overly explosive.

That might not matter for third-down duties, though. And while we didn’t get to see Smith’s workout numbers at the combine, he certainly could be in the running for San Francisco’s final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft.
