Round 6, Pick No. 187 Overall (from Broncos): 49ers select S Leon O’Neal Jr., Texas A&M

Much of what the 49ers do within their secondary is going to predicated upon whether or not they’re able to re-sign strong safety Jaquiski Tartt this offseason. And despite his injury history, there are strong reasons why he should be retained.

Sure, the Niners already have second-year pro safety Talanoa Hufanga on the roster, and he flashed some promise his rookie season. But lacking in both speed and coverage, Hufanga might be relegated to mere special teams duties and someone who can serve as a big-nickel defensive back.

Not much more.

Going after Texas A&M safety Leon O’Neal Jr. wouldn’t immediately provide a long-term starting-caliber option either, but it would serve to boost up the depth behind Tartt, should he re-sign, and it would also add to the competition if Tartt walks.

O’Neil, 6-foot-0 and 204 pounds, didn’t run at the NFL Combine but managed a 125-inch broad jump with a three-cone drill time of 6.89 seconds after registering a combined four interceptions over his last two years with the Aggies.
