Round 4, Pick No. 113 Overall (from Commanders): 49ers select WR Calvin Austin III, Memphis

The 49ers are going to want to surround Trey Lance with as many weapons as possible this offseason, and adding Trey McBride to pair with George Kittle surely helps that.

And while the Niners have two high-quality wide receivers atop the depth chart in Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk, what could help even more is if the team added a field-stretching threat who’s absolutely explosive with the ball in his hands.

At 5-foot-8 and 170 pounds, Memphis wide receiver Calvin Austin III could have been a late day-three pick, as teams would have questioned whether or not his small stature could withstand the rigors of day-to-day life at the NFL level.

Yet Austin dazzled in the drills he was supposed to dazzle in at the combine, running a blazing-fast 4.32 40-yard time while also netting 135 inches in the broad jump and a 4.07 20-yard shuttle.

Austin, who had back-to-back 1,000-yard receiving seasons with the Tigers, won’t fall beyond Round 4 now, and he also won’t make it to San Francisco’s own pick in the round, prompting the 49ers to send off their own pick in the round, plus their own fifth- and a seventh-round pick to the Washington Commanders to trade up and grab him.
