Round 3, Pick No. 101 Overall (Compensatory): 49ers select TE Trey McBride, Colorado State

The 49ers get a bit of a luxury pick, thanks to Mike McDaniel’s departure, and it wouldn’t be shocking to see them go after, well… a luxury pick.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan has long sought a No. 2 tight end to pair with All-Pro George Kittle. And with the Niners’ second-string tight end Ross Dwelley hitting the free-agent market, it only makes sense for Shanahan to dip into what’s a notably deep pool of tight ends.

Few tight ends impressed as much at the combine than Colorado State’s Trey McBride, who might end up being the top tight end selected in this year’s NFL Draft, although finding McBride towards the end of Round 3 might be a total steal.

McBride, who was the Rams’ top target and recorded a whopping 1,121 yards on 90 catches last year, didn’t run the 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine but nevertheless showed ranginess with a broad jump of 117 inches.

San Francisco might have other pressing needs at this spot, yes, but one would have to figure Shanahan would fill that goal of finding a player who checks off that long-awaited box of a high-caliber complementary tight end.
