The Cowboys are expected to part ways with Amari Cooper, so naturally the 49ers may be seen as a potential suitor until you look at the other options.

Naturally, when a high-profile player appears to be made available on the market, most NFL teams are somehow linked in one way or another.

Such is now the case about Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Amari Cooper, who spent the last three-plus seasons with his new team following that 2018 midseason trade with the Oakland Raiders.

Cooper is now being made available via a trade, according to a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, and the Cowboys’ plan is to outright release Cooper if there’s no trade market available. In an attempt to free up some much-needed cap space and to allow fellow Dallas wideout CeeDee Lamb to truly be the No. 1 option, Cooper’s days in Big D are surely numbered now.

It won’t take too long for some within the San Francisco 49ers fanbase to say, “let’s get him.”

Sure, on the surface, there’s some sense to the argument. The Niners want to surround second-year quarterback Trey Lance with as many weapons as possible, and Cooper’s 3,893 receiving yards and 27 touchdowns with Dallas suggest the 27 year old former top-five NFL Draft pick is still as potent a weapon as he was when the Cowboys originally traded for him.

But it doesn’t take too much to dig deeper and see why San Francisco should have no business trying to pick up Cooper, either via a trade or if he’s released, subsequently signing him to a free-agent deal.

Instead, let’s explore these four better options from the 49ers’ vantage point.
