3 potential 49ers free agents we won’t miss if they sign elsewhere
49ers Free Agent No. 2: Mohamad Sanu, Wide Receiver
Mohamed Sanu can best be described as “that guy.” When you see him catch the ball, you’re reminded that, “Oh right, Mohamed Sanu plays for us.”
Sanu was signed with an eye towards providing competition for the third wide receiver spot. But despite some early opportunities to get snaps when Brandon Aiyuk was in the proverbial doghouse, Sanu couldn’t become a reliable presence.
Instead seventh-round draft pick Jauan Jennings stood up and made the position of third receiver his own, which will no doubt please the 49ers to have a promising young trio along with the exciting Deebo Samuel.
Sanu had 17 catches for 187 yards and no touchdowns. It should be said he had only 24 targets, so he was admittedly a reliable presence when called upon, but the 49ers are looking for more this offseason.
The Niners’ main need at receiver is someone super speedy who could potentially double as a returner. Sanu does not admittedly fit this description.
Some players just don’t fit into a certain situation, and Sanu is one of those players. He’ll sign with a team as a veteran presence, but it shouldn’t be at San Francisco.
