Free Agent No. 3: Travis Benjamin, Wide Receiver

Similar to Mohamad Sanu, Travis Benjamin has never been able to progress up the depth chart, being buried there unless needed.

The key difference is Sanu was able to impact the stat line, whereas Benjamin was never in any position to make an impact with zero receptions and only three targets in 10 games.

I was hoping Benjamin would be able to make his mark in the return game, but his kick returning was woefully bad when called upon. He was decent enough in the punt-return game at least.

Without making the mark on special teams expected of him, Benjamin isn’t someone the team can have faith on in 2022. Buried deep on the receiver depth chart if he stayed, the inference is the 49ers would have to gamble on him to be a full-time returner to be worth taking back.

But at 32 years old, it may just be easier to find someone younger and more dynamic who can also fill the role of deep threat that Benjamin is just unable to fill.

While the starters at receiver look like they’re locked in, expect to see a lot of change happening when it comes to depth in 2022.
