The 49ers are all but guaranteed to move Jimmy Garoppolo this offseason, and one team has emerged as the likely betting favorite to land him.

While San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan didn’t come outright and say his team was trying to trade quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo this offseason, Garoppolo’s subsequent press conference following the Niners’ NFC Championship loss to the Los Angeles Rams seemed to suggest so.

In that conference, Garoppolo alluded to the reality of him being moved this offseason:

"I was talking to John [Lynch] yesterday just about finding the right destination and whatever the future holds just doing it the right way. I’ve got a long career ahead of me. So I’m excited about it. I’m excited about the opportunities to come. I just want to go to a place where they want to win."

A would-be move would free up San Francisco from over $25 million owed to Garoppolo next season and pave the way for the 49ers to start their high-profile 2021 rookie signal-caller, Trey Lance, in 2022 while also recouping some of the draft capital used to grab Lance at No. 3 overall last spring.

There’s expected to be a pretty lucrative market for Garoppolo this offseason, too, as FanSided NFL insider Matt Lombardo pointed out in his weekly column, speculating a number of teams would be interested in making a trade with the Niners for Jimmy G’s services:

"Jimmy Garoppolo, fresh off passing for 232 yards and two touchdowns, giving the San Francisco 49ers a 20-7 lead entering the fourth quarter of Sunday’s NFC Championship Game against the Los Angeles Rams, is expected to be one of the more sought after quarterbacks despite tossing a back-breaking interception with 1:09 remaining that prevented Robbie Gould to kick the Niners into the Super Bowl. One current personnel director tells FanSided the expectation inside the league is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Denver Broncos are expected to make a strong push to trade for Garoppolo."

But which ones are the favorite?

Betting odds for which team trades for Jimmy Garoppolo

The oddsmakers over at WynnBET haven’t released favorites for the quarterback-needy teams out there potentially involved in a would-be Garoppolo trade just yet.

However, Matt De Saro of FanSided’s sports-betting department, BetSided, broke down the odds for teams possibly seeking out a trade with San Francisco.

And there’s one standing above the rest.

  1. Pittsburgh Steelers +450
  2. Washington Football Team +500
  3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers +600
  4. Denver Broncos +600
  5. Carolina Panthers +750
  6. Miami Dolphins +800
  7. Houston Texans +1050
  8. Green Bay Packers +1100

All those teams either need or potentially need a starting-caliber quarterback, even the Texans and Packers if they elect to move on from Deshaun Watson and Aaron Rodgers, respectively.

As far as the Steelers, though, watching quarterback Ben Roethlisberger retire amid yet another playoff season suggests the fit might be a good one for all parties involved. Garoppolo would go to a team regularly in the playoff discussion under one of the best head coaches in NFL history, Mike Tomlin, while Pittsburgh would want to keep its playoff window open while still boasting plenty of skill-position players like running back Najee Harris, EDGE T.J. Watt and wide receiver Diontae Johnson.

Garoppolo would be landing with a team that places an emphasis on winning, too, while the Steelers would probably be willing to part ways with their second-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft as the premier piece of a trade package back to the Niners.

Of course, there could end up being a bidding war between some of the other teams involved, as the offseason quarterback isn’t expected to be a strong one, either by the way of free agency or the NFL Draft.

And if teams miss out on a would-be trade for Rodgers, Watson or even the Seattle Seahawks’ Russell Wilson, an aggressive push for Garoppolo could end up taking place.

Right now, it appears as if the Steelers would be in the lead.
