With the 2021 season officially over for the 49ers, the Niner Noise Podcast explores whether or not last year’s campaign was a success or failure.

The San Francisco 49ers failed the ultimate goal in 2021.

Of course, so will 31 other teams. That goal, of course, is to win the Super Bowl.

The Niners making it to the 2022 NFC Championship game, especially in light of their 3-5 start and early speculation head coach Kyle Shanahan’s squad wouldn’t even make the playoffs, is still quite the achievement. Being one of the NFL’s final four teams typically is that.

At the same time, though, San Francisco shouldn’t be content just getting there. Perhaps a handful of plays here or there in the conference championship, and the 49ers would have continued their previously lengthy win streak over the eventual NFC victors, the Los Angeles Rams, and earned a trip to Super Bowl LVI.

Alas, no dice.

Niner Noise Podcast recaps NFC Championship game, 2021 campaign

Your Niner Noise Podcast hosts, Robert Morrison and Peter Panacy, weren’t too upset with the eventual outcome in the NFC Championship game, citing just how bad things were looking earlier in the season and the reality the Niners were essentially playing with “house money” after advancing beyond the Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card round.

Taking that 20,000-foot perspective on San Francisco’s entire 2021 campaign is important in that regard.

There were plenty of storylines accompanying the 2021 season, but none bigger than the fact the 49ers are poised to move on from quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo this offseason, one of those challenges the team will face.

Garoppolo’s performance in the NFC Championship wasn’t great, especially in the fourth quarter, and that’s something Morrison and Panacy highlight.

And it points to why the Niners want to ensure Garoppolo’s replacement, Trey Lance, is put into the best position to succeed overall.
