The San Francisco 49ers opened the year with a 3-5 record. The offense was struggling, averaging a middling 23.1 points per game (PPG), and the calls to bench Jimmy Garoppolo grew louder with each passing week.

But everything changed against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 10. Kyle Shanahan unveiled a new wrinkle to his offense, unleashing Deebo Samuel as a rusher for the first time all year. The team never looked back. San Francisco’s new-look offense averaged 27.3 PPG while winning seven of the eight regular-season games that Deebo appeared in.

The 49ers and Rams will meet again this Sunday – this time in the NFC Championship. And you can bet Shanahan has big plans for the focal point of his offense this weekend.
