49ers Opponent No. 5: Miami Dolphins

The first game on our “winnable” list was almost a tossup.

Sure, it would have been tempting to throw in a potentially rebuilding Seattle Seahawks team in there, or even the Los Angeles Rams, whom Kyle Shanahan has beaten six times in a row.

But LA is still dangerous regardless, and Seattle hasn’t parted ways with head coach Pete Carroll and quarterback Russell Wilson just yet. If any of that changes, the whole landscape of the NFC West changes.

For now, though, the Miami Dolphins seem like a feasible candidate to be included on the winnable-games list, particularly in the wake of firing head coach Brian Flores, which was quite the shock.

Whoever emerges as the new head coach will have to determine whether or not quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is the guy, or if Miami wants to use high NFL Draft investments to bring aboard another quarterback, potentially via the draft or, more likely, through a trade.

The Dolphins finished the 2021 regular season on a high note, making Flores’ firing a surprising one.

Yet with so much uncertainty surrounding Miami this offseason, particularly at the helm of the organization and under center, the 49ers have to feel pretty confident they can take advantage early of what could be a restructuring Dolphins franchise next season.
