49ers roster: 4 players who have played their last game with San Francisco
No. 3: 49ers Cornerback Jason Verrett
Jason Verrett was a bright spot on the Niners roster in 2020.
So bright in fact it earned him a return to the secondary on another one-year deal. Last season probably would’ve earned him a long-term contract if not for his history of injuries. In fact, he’s struggled through most of his career to stay healthy, appearing in just six regular-season games between 2016 and 2019, and prior to signing with San Francisco, he landed on injured reserve a total of four times.
Seeing him play an entire season in good health while playing on a 2020 49ers team that saw 30 players reach IR is the ultimate irony.
The secondary could definitely use Verrett’s help, but he’s had more seasons hurt than he has heathy. When he’s on the field, he’s been lights out, and in addition to his ability when on the field, his locker room presence is a positive one.
That’s evident by the uproar of his teammates following his injury in Week 1.
Unfortunately, for the staff, it may not be worth cutting someone else with emerging talent to see if the soon-to-be free-agent Verrett can stay healthy.
Especially when those chances, based on previous seasons, are slim.
