CBS. Sunday, Jan. 16. 123. Cowboys -3. 10-7. 4:30 p.m. ET. 42. 12-5

The 49ers are in the NFL playoffs, and they’ll travel to Texas to take on the NFC East champions, the Cowboys, in the Wild Card round.

It’s only fitting the San Francisco 49ers‘ return to the postseason should feature an opening Wild Card-round matchup against their longtime playoff rivals, the Dallas Cowboys.

Younger Niners fans may not remember, but there were decades when these two teams absolutely hated each other, stemming back to the 1970s, “The Catch” in the 1982 NFC Championship game and then even further great moments for both sides in the 1990s.

It’s time to rekindle that rivalry once more.

It won’t be easy for head coach Kyle Shanahan and Co., who needed an overtime thriller against the Los Angeles Rams to even get into the playoff dance. Dallas enters the postseason with the NFL’s No. 1-ranked offense, both in terms of scoring and yards gained, and the seventh-best scoring defense poses a challenge for a revitalized quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo, and the rest of San Francisco’s offense.

Yet for those who believe the 49ers are built for postseason play, this matchup might end up working in the Niners’ favor.

Despite San Francisco’s own defensive shortcomings, namely in the secondary, the oddsmakers over at WynnBET aren’t automatically assuming quarterback Dak Prescott and the Cowboys’ high-output offense creates a massive mismatch.

The 49ers are only three-point road underdogs in this contest, and there’s also a good chance the Niners Faithful fill AT&T Stadium with red and gold, much like they did SoFI Stadium in Week 18.

Dallas’ moneyline is -160, while San Francisco’s is +130.

The odds are suggesting a high-scoring game with the over/under currently set at 50.5.

While the Cowboys offense could pose plenty of problems for a questionable 49ers secondary, this is shaping up to be a game the Niners could win simply by dominating the time of possession.

Despite a complete 180 turnaround on the defensive side of the ball from last season, Dallas is still vulnerable against the run, finishing off the regular season allowing an average of 4.5 yards per rush, which was good for 23rd in the league.

That should play right into what Shanahan and the offense will want to do.

Look for Shanahan to get back to a run-heavy offensive approach, potentially reaching 40 carries in the game in an attempt to keep Prescott and Co. off the field as much as possible. And while this might not translate into both teams reaching the over in this game, San Francisco couldn’t care less.

Let’s go all-in with the 49ers winning here, pulling off the upset by a score of 28-24 and advancing to the divisional round.

The Niners and Cowboys kick off their Wild Card NFL playoffs matchup on Sunday, Jan. 16 at 4:30 p.m. from AT&T Stadium.
