The 49ers can’t afford another slip-up after what happened versus the Titans, so hopefully, the lowly Texans present a juicy opportunity for a win.

On the positive side, in light of the San Francisco 49ers‘ Week 16 Thursday Night Football loss to the Tennessee Titans, the short-week road trip was neither a game many had long predicted the Niners to win, nor did it drastically alter their chances of making the postseason.

True, San Francisco’s playoff chances took a hit, now dropped to 62.8 percent, according to Football Outsiders. But that number should increase again if the 49ers handle their business appropriately against the 4-11 Houston Texans in Week 17.

Yes, the Texans just pulled off an incredible and unpredictable 41-29 win over the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 16, riding a strong outing by running back Rex Burkhead. Yet the Niners can hopefully use their mini bye week and extra period of rest and preparation to ensure what happened at Tennessee — losing a winnable game — doesn’t replicate itself again.

Because if it does, it’ll be absolutely disastrous for head coach Kyle Shanahan and Co.

Fortunately, that trend isn’t what the oddsmakers are banking on.

49ers vs. Texans odds Week 17

San Francisco might have only been a slight favorite over the Titans, but it’s a massive opening 14.5-point favorite for Week 17 versus the Texans, according to the oddsmakers over at WynnBET.

On paper, this is a game the 49ers should dominate. Despite its win, Houston is still massively deficient on both sides of the ball, while that extra time affords the Niners what they need to get back into the win column.

San Francisco’s moneyline is currently at -1000, whereas Houston is at +650.

The over/under is 45.0.

49ers vs. Texans prediction Week 17

Double-digit lines are always a bit tricky and dangerous at times, yet this is still a case where the 49ers hold nearly all the advantages aside from which team won or lost the previous week.

Bettors might be intrigued by Houston pulling off such a one-sided win over a usually resilient Chargers team a week ago, but the Texans still boast a bottom-five offense and defense, meaning all the Niners need to do is ensure they play a relatively clean game.

A bit of a wish, of course, given what happened versus the Titans. Considering San Francisco’s playoff aspirations are still very much on the line, though, Shanahan’s squad still has to be on point despite the level of its upcoming opponent.

Expect the 49ers to get back on track in this one, perhaps not pulling off a dominant one-sided win as the line suggests.

Houston might cover in our prediction, but the Niners still pull off a 27-21 victory in Week 17 regardless.
