Round 7, Pick No. 252 Overall (Compensatory): Wide Receiver Duece Watts, Tulane

Round 7 compensatory picks are the pure definition of proverbially throwing darts at the dartboard, hoping something sticks.

San Francisco has some depth needs at wide receiver behind Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk. And while No. 3 wideout Jauan Jennings has taken some notable strides this season and figures to fill a key role next year, there isn’t much long-term promise on the roster elsewhere at the position.

The 49ers still need a deep threat who can stretch the field, and despite lacking in pure production, Tulane wide receiver Duece Watts has that deep-threat capability to go with a solid 6-foot-2, 195-pound frame.

Watts might benefit from another year in college, yes, as his 798 receiving yards and eight touchdowns over two collegiate seasons won’t jump off the stat sheet. But as a late-round flier, the Niners can hope to get something productive out of someone with a raw unteachable skill set.
