49ers roster: 3 kickers San Francisco should eye as Robbie Gould insurance
No. 3: 49ers can watch a CFL standout, Lirim Hajrullahu, who hasn’t had a fair chance in the NFL yet
He might have a tough name to pronounce, but if Lirim Hajrullahu can try out and make the 49ers, fans will have no problems trying to learn it.
Hajrullahu’s NFL career hasn’t taken off as many expected. The Gjilan, Kosovo-born kicker had quite the CFL career. He spent six seasons between the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Toronto Argonauts, and Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He finished his time up North with a career field-goal percentage at 83.3.
He also helped the Argonauts take down the Calgary Stampeders in the 2017 Grey Cup with a last-minute field goal in extremely snowy conditions.
Despite his CFL success, he just hasn’t been able to stick on an NFL roster. He had a chance with the Los Angeles Rams but lost out to a rookie kicker who went to Miami University, which is also the same school Rams head coach Sean McVay attended. Hajrullahu was statistically the better of the two, but many assumed the school connection was the difference-maker.
He then attempted to get his career going with the Carolina Panthers, but work visa issues blocked any plans. And finally, he was with the Dallas Cowboys but has since been released.
Lirim Hajrullahu has quite an interesting life story. 3DownNation highlights a bit of it here.
