49ers game Sunday: 49ers vs. Cardinals odds and prediction for NFL Week 9 game
By Peter Panacy
The 49ers look to get another win streak going after beating the Bears, and they may have a chance to do so in Week 9 against the Cardinals because of one key factor.
The San Francisco 49ers finally put an end to their four-game losing streak by pulling off a much-needed road win over the Chicago Bears in Week 8.
Yet there’s another losing streak head coach Kyle Shanahan and Co. want to end, and that’s not having won a home game at Levi’s Stadium since Oct. 8, 2019 against the Los Angeles Rams.
Yes, a full year since the Niners have won at Levi’s Stadium. And here we are, nearly halfway through San Francisco’s 2021 schedule.
It wouldn’t be a promising proposition for the 3-4 49ers, who have to face off against the NFC West-leading Arizona Cardinals, whose only loss of the year came on Thursday Night Football in Week 8 against the Green Bay Packers.
But if the Niners want to catch a lucky break, a banged-up Arizona squad might present the perfect opportunity.
49ers vs. Cardinals odds Week 9
Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer (h/t Pro Football Talk) reported Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray suffered an ankle sprain during Arizona’s Week 8 loss to Green Bay and could potentially miss one to three weeks.
The report suggested it’s possible Murray is healthy enough to play the Week 9 bout at Levi’s Stadium. If he doesn’t, though, the Cardinals may be forced to start No. 2 quarterback Colt McCoy, who has yet to toss a pass this season and who hasn’t started a game since Week 15 of the 2020 season when he was a member of the New York Giants.
Also, the red birds will be without veteran EDGE J.J. Watt for the rest of the year because of a shoulder injury.
As a result, WynnBET’s oddsmakers have the Cardinals as a 2.5-point favorite to open up the week. San Francisco’s moneyline is at +125, while Arizona is at -145.
The over/under for this game is 47.0.
49ers vs. Cardinals prediction Week 9
Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will be coming off his best game of the season in beating the Bears, a bout in which he tossed over 300 yards and actually rushed for two touchdowns.
But the last time the 49ers played the Cardinals, it was rookie quarterback Trey Lance who was under center in relief of a then-injured Garoppolo, ultimately falling to Arizona 17-10.
Perhaps the Niners defense, effective enough in that contest, can make things interesting against the Cardinals if they’re without Murray, who has been playing at an MVP level despite some relative struggles against San Francisco back in Week 5. And the 49ers’ home losing streak has to come to an end at some point, too, right?
Maybe that’ll help give the Niners an edge to a certain degree, but Arizona’s mini bye week after playing Week 8’s Thursday Night Football game affords plenty of rest and added preparation.
That likely winds up proving to be the difference in a frustrating return to the loss column for San Francisco, who winds up falling to 3-5 after losing 27-17.
