No. 4: 49ers Left Tackle Trent Williams

There has to be some solace for Trey Lance knowing full well he’s playing behind one of, if not the best offensive tackle in football right now, Trent Williams.

Williams, who exited last Sunday’s game with a shoulder injury, is a full-go for Week 5, which is excellent news for both Lance and the Niners offense. Not only will Williams serve as an elite-level blindside blocker for the rookie, who has still yet to master the art of navigating against and reacting to pressure, but also as a lead blocker on weak-side runs.

Against a Cardinals team allowing 5.4 yards per carry, 31st in the NFL through four Weeks, Williams should have more than a handful of opportunities to open up rush lanes for Lance.

Considering Lance had to rely on his legs a lot during his two quarters of action in Week 4, it wouldn’t be surprising at all if he did more of the same against Arizona.

Using Williams as a bully in front of him should do Lance a lot of wonders.

And it certainly won’t hurt having some elite-level pass protection on that side, too.
