49ers game Sunday: 49ers vs. Cardinals odds and prediction for NFL Week 5 game
By Peter Panacy
The 49ers won’t be faced with an easy task as they have to bounce back from a tough loss to the Seahawks by traveling to take on the undefeated Cardinals.
The San Francisco 49ers can either use the adversity they’ve faced over the last two weeks, back-to-back losses at home against the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks, as motivation for what’s going to be a telling Week 5 road matchup against the undefeated Arizona Cardinals.
Or the Niners can continue their slip after starting off the year a perfect 2-0, falling even further in the NFC West standings with another loss within the division.
Now at 2-2 and last place within the NFC West, head coach Kyle Shanahan’s squad gets to face off against a red-hot Cardinals team that pulled off a massive upset over the Los Angeles Rams in Week 4. While many expected the Cardinals to contend for a playoff berth this season, few likely anticipated a perfect start to the year.
Particularly with how well third-year quarterback Kyler Murray has been playing.
49ers vs. Cardinals odds Week 5
The oddsmakers over at WynnBET gave an opening line favoring Arizona by 4.5 points, which might come as a bit of a surprise because, as of now, it’s still unclear which quarterback Shanahan will have to start in the game.
Normally, this would be Jimmy Garoppolo‘s job. But after suffering a calf injury in the first quarter and subsequently sitting out the second half, rookie quarterback Trey Lance could easily wind up getting the first start of his young career in Week 5.
The severity of Garoppolo’s injury isn’t yet known. But if he ends up missing multiple weeks, it wouldn’t be totally shocking to see the line increase against San Francisco’s favor.
The Niners’ moneyline is +195, whereas the Cardinals enter at -230.
The over/under for this bout opens up at 53.0.
49ers vs. Cardinals prediction Week 5
Falling to 2-3 would be disastrous for San Francisco, but that’s the reality Shanahan and Co. are facing. And while Lance would offer a dynamic the 49ers offense hasn’t totally experienced much this season, there are going to be some notable limitations from the inexperienced quarterback.
The Niners may be able to take advantage of a still-suspect Arizona run defense, which was allowing a second-to-worst 5.4 yards per rush entering Week 4 and then allowed 5.3 yards per carry in their upset win over the Los Angeles Rams.
From a prediction standpoint, it’s hard to speculate a San Francisco victory. While Shanahan’s squad ends up covering the spread in this game, look for the Cardinals to come away with a 27-24 win at State Farm Stadium.
