Despite only playing four snaps in 2021, 49ers rookie Trey Lance already has better MVP odds this season than this former NFL MVP player.

San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance has only attempted a single pass this season.

Luckily for him and the Niners, that lone pass back in Week 1 went for a touchdown, giving the No. 3 overall pick from the 2021 NFL Draft a perfect 100-percent touchdown rating on all of his throws.

Yes, a perfect 1-of-1 finding the end zone.

But Lance has only been on the field for four snaps this year, and all of those came during San Francisco’s Week 1 victory over the Detroit Lions. In Week 2, when the 49ers traveled to take on the Philadelphia Eagles, it was Jimmy Garoppolo who saw all the team’s snaps at quarterback, not Lance, who didn’t see the field whatsoever.

As such, it’s not surprising to see Lance buried way down on WynnBET’s odds for NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, considering the Niners are likely to ride their current situation with Jimmy G and Lance, the former being the regular starter not ready to give way to the rookie anytime soon.

But the interesting part? Lance actually has better 2021 MVP odds than a not-so-long-ago league MVP.

Trey Lance has better MVP odds than Falcons QB Matt Ryan

It sounds kind of weird, but it’s actually true. San Francisco’s rookie, with all of his glorious four snaps over two weeks this season, has better 2021 MVP odds than Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, who won the award under now-49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan back when the Falcons made it to the Super Bowl after an impressive 2016 campaign.

As for those MVP odds, here you go:

  • Trey Lance: +10,000
  • Matt Ryan: +15,000

You can probably figure out who’s close to the top of 2021 MVP odds this season. But if you need a hint, they played against each other in the Super Bowl last February.

Still, even though both Lance and Ryan are way down the list of possibilities this year, it’s kind of crazy to think Lance would have better odds as a current backup than a player who both once won the award already and is currently starting.

OK, the 0-2 Falcons are terrible, and Ryan isn’t doing much of anything to justify even having a long shot at contending for the accolade this season.

And the oddsmakers are likely hinging on the possibility Shanahan decides to make that switch from Garoppolo to Lance at some point this year, letting the rookie showcase all his talents on a playoff-likely Niners squad.
