49ers game Sunday: 49ers vs. Packers odds and prediction for NFL Week 3 game
By Peter Panacy
The 49ers are slight favorites against the visiting Packers for Week 3 on Sunday Night Football in what’ll be the Niners’ first true test of 2021.
The San Francisco 49ers have already overcome a sizable challenge to start their 2021 regular-season campaign, going on the road and beating both the Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles to start the season 2-0.
Returning home, however, the Niners have to face off against the 1-1 Green Bay Packers in what should be head coach Kyle Shanahan’s first significant test of the year. Especially after the Packers rebounded with a solid 35-17 Monday Night Football win over the Detroit Lions to close out Week 2.
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers bounced back in a big way under the prime-time bright lights, and he’ll look to do more of the same when these two teams square off on Sunday Night Football in Week 3.
Yet San Francisco’s again-formidable pass rush could have something to say about that.
49ers vs. Packers odds Week 3
The oddsmakers over at WynnBET have the 49ers as 3.5-point favorites over the visiting Packers, which is essentially the slight edge, plus half a point, usually given to the home team.
The Niners have the moneyline at -185, while Green Bay is at +155.
Week 3’s Sunday Night Football bout also has an over/under of 49.5.
49ers vs. Packers prediction Week 3
A then-fully healthy San Francisco squad demolished Rodgers and the Packers both times during the 2019 season, first in their Week 12 regular-season matchup, 37-8, and then again in the 2020 NFC Championship game where the 49ers ran their way to a one-sided 37-20 victory en route to the Super Bowl.
Last year, however, a banged-up 49ers squad fell to Green Bay 34-17 on Thursday Night Football within a season where the Niners endured more injuries than any other team in the NFL.
Hot Read: Niners dodge bullets on the injury front in Week 2
San Francisco is already dealing with some notable injuries this season, mainly running back Raheem Mostert and cornerback Jason Verrett, who are out for the year with knee injuries. Yet the pass-rushing duo of EDGEs Nick Bosa and Dee Ford will look to make life awfully difficult on Rodgers again after essentially doing the same during the 2019 season.
If those two are up to par, and 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo does enough to not cost his team in a major way, look for the Niners to come away with a 27-21 Week 3 victory and improve to 3-0 on the young season.
