A lot of 49ers fans are screaming for this to happen, and they may be onto something. Take a look at three reasons we think Trey Lance should start Week 2.

But am I one of those fans?

No. I actually think San Francisco 49ers rookie sensation Trey Lance would be better off sitting behind current signal-caller Jimmy Garoppolo for some time before being thrown into the fire. I do have the ability to look at things from a different lens, though, and I think it would be interesting to take a sort of “Devil’s Advocate” approach with this topic.

While I do believe Lance has the higher ceiling by far due to his dynamic playmaking skills and strong downfield arm, I also believe he is a raw prospect and needs to sharpen some of his more technical skills to be trusted as the full-time starter.

Though I can absolutely see the benefit in having him thrown into the fire from day one, and I do think there are legitimate arguments that point to this fact, it makes it a little harder to make this decision after Garoppolo’s Week 1 performance against the Detroit Lions in which he played virtually lights out, going 17-of-25 for 314 yards and a touchdown pass with no picks, and most importantly a W.

Having said that, here are my takes on three reasons why Lance must be the Week 2 starter for the Niners on the road against the Philadelphia Eagles.
