49ers game Sunday: 49ers vs. Lions odds and prediction for NFL Week 1 game
By Peter Panacy
The 49ers face off in Week 1 on the road against the Lions, and Niner Noise breaks down the latest betting odds and predictions for the season opener.
After months of waiting and the tease of the preseason, the 2021 NFL campaign is about to kick off, and the San Francisco 49ers will look to get back into the playoff discussion as they visit the rebuilding Detroit Lions for Week 1 of the regular season.
The Niners, winners of two games out of three during the preseason, probably end up starting their veteran quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo, although the speculation surrounding rookie signal-caller Trey Lance has been awfully loud ever since he was selected at No. 3 overall in this year’s NFL Draft.
Meanwhile, the Lions are looking to start off strong under first-year head coach Dan Campbell and will throw out a familiar face to San Francisco, former Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jared Goff.
In his career, Goff has a 3-5 record against the 49ers.
49ers vs. Lions odds Week 1
The Week 1 betting odds on WynnBET have the Niners as minus-7.5 point favorites on the road for this bout, which is pretty substantial given oddsmakers typically give the home team a three-point advantage.
The money line is minus-360 for San Francisco, meaning a $360 wager on the 49ers would win an additional $100 in the final payout if the Niners pull off the victory.
WynnBET has the over/under set at 46.0.
49ers vs. Lions prediction Week 1
San Francisco and Detroit are at two entirely different phases of their team plans for 2021. The 49ers, fresh off a disappointing 2020 campaign where injuries were the biggest theme, nevertheless have a Super Bowl-caliber roster and an up-and-coming quarterback in Lance, despite Garoppolo’s veteran prowess.
The Lions, in year one of the Campbell era, are strong contenders for a top-five draft pick in 2022, so the easy prediction would be in the Niners’ favor even if they’re on the road.
That said, Week 1 games can be weird. Remember back in 2016 when an eventual 2-14 San Francisco squad throttled the Rams 28-0?
One can only hope the Lions don’t pull off a similar kind of upset.
But this wouldn’t be a smart prediction, right? No, instead let’s go with the 49ers pulling off a relatively one-sided 24-10 win in Week 1.
The Niners and Lions kick off on Sunday, Sept. 12 at 1 p.m. ET from Ford Field in Detroit.
