49ers Waiver-Wire Target No. 2: Wide Receiver Isaiah Ford

Travis Fulgham might be the more physical type of receiver who’d provide a safer option over Jalen Hurd.

But if Kyle Shanahan is looking for someone with above-average route-running skills without having to sacrifice size, former Miami Dolphins wideout Isaiah Ford might be a better commodity.

Ford was underutilized in Miami’s offense the last two seasons after entering the league as a seventh-round NFL Draft pick out of Virginia Tech, redshirting his rookie year with a knee injury that put him on injured reserve.

To date, over three years on the field, Ford has just 51 catches for 520 yards and no touchdowns as of yet. However, the combination of his route-running prowess and likable 6-foot-2 and 194-pound frame could make for an intriguing option even if Ford lacks the straight-line speed to beat defensive backs in a one-on-one race.

Separation, not speed is more important to Shanahan’s offense anyway, although the head coach certainly prefers both.

And at 25 years old, it’s safe to assume Ford still has room to develop.
