49ers Waiver-Wire Target No. 4: Offensive Guard Forrest Lamp

It’s unfortunate former Los Angeles Chargers and Buffalo Bills offensive guard Forrest Lamp never lived up to his relatively lofty NFL Draft pedigree when he was selected in Round 2 at No. 38 overall out of Western Kentucky.

True, an injury his rookie season might have set him back a lot. But that does mean he’s missing an accrued season. And even though he never quite caught on amid the regime changes in Los Angeles, subsequently failing to make a now-good Bills offensive line, San Francisco could be in a position where finding some youthful reinforcement for its own O-line might help.

The 49ers elected to retain the veteran, Tom Compton, as a reserve guard to go along with their second-round pick, Aaron Banks, who lost a bid to start right away his rookie year.

Lamp, who is still just 27 years old, could benefit from more zone-style play, and it wouldn’t be too much of a reach to suggest he’s an upgrade over Compton anyway.

Anything above being an improvement over Compton would be an easy bonus from the Niners’ vantage point.
