QB Trey Lance

To be sure, Kyle Shanahan has talked a lot about liking to keep three quarterbacks on his roster and has done so throughout his tenure in San Francisco. That really should end in 2021 with the quarterback room standing to be in the best shape it’s been in since Shanahan arrived.

Whoever ends up being the starting quarterback for Week 1, Week 6 or beyond, the duo of Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance should put the 49ers in a position to be successful this season, seeing as the player who wins the job is the guy who has showed himself to be the best option for the team.

On top of that, third-string quarterback Nate Sudfeld hasn’t really shown himself to be worthy of a roster spot this preseason, and while he may well end up on the 49ers’ practice squad, giving the veteran signal-caller a place on the roster feels irresponsible.

The 49ers should be in good hands with either Garoppolo or Lance under center and if they both go down with injuries then the season is over anyway. The team should free up spots elsewhere on the roster and only keep the two quarterbacks in 2021.
