No. 3: 49ers WR Jauan Jennings

Jauan Jennings is another of those receivers vying for one of the final two spots, and although he looked very good heading into the final preseason game, he still needed one last performance to cement his spot on the 53-man roster.

Unfortunately for Jennings, his most notable play of the game was a drop on a perfect Trey Lance pass at the goal line that would have been a touchdown. It was a disappointing play for Jennings. And while in the grand scheme of things, it wouldn’t have mattered, the few amounts of passing snaps in the game meant every issue is highlighted under a microscope.

Dropping a touchdown matters for Jennings in part because of his status on the roster as a seventh-round pick who doesn’t curry much roster weight. And when Kyle Shanahan called Jalen Hurd’s performance, one befit of several drops and a lack of explosiveness, a success, it underlines this very issue.

Until he becomes a proven regular season option, a player like Jennings will unfortunately be someone on the bubble. While he could ultimately make the roster when it’s all said and done, he didn’t himself any favors this game.
