49ers TE George Kittle has regularly backed Jimmy Garoppolo despite Trey Lance now being in the fray, and he’s a little over all the questions.

All-Pro tight end George Kittle is fully aware the San Francisco 49ers have a red-hot quarterback competition on their hands heading into the 2021 season.

Despite Kittle being a regular advocate for the Niners’ veteran starter, Jimmy Garoppolo, head coach Kyle Shanahan’s move to get up to No. 3 overall in this year’s NFL Draft to take rookie quarterback Trey Lance is the proverbial “writing on the wall” everyone needs to understand why Lance is the future.

Not Jimmy G.

Nevertheless, Kittle has remained devoted to his “bromance” partner, Garoppolo, for quite some time now, especially this offseason when the media raised its collective eyebrows in the wake of Garoppolo turning into something of a lame duck.

Naturally, Kittle understands it’s a competition between the two quarterbacks. For now, at least, the best option will win out to start for San Francisco in 2021, even if the long-term plans remain cloudy at best.

But the questions Kittle regularly faces still highlight the two quarterbacks trying to get him the ball, and he had a blunt answer in response after the 49ers’ joint practice with the Los Angeles Chargers on Friday.

George Kittle sure seems tired of all the Jimmy Garoppolo, Trey Lance questions

Speaking to the media after Friday’s practice, Kittle took an inaudible question from one of the reporters attending the press conference.

While the exact question couldn’t be heard, it’s pretty clear Garoppolo and Lance were the subject matter.

“I’ve been asked Jimmy questions for about three years, and I’ve been asked Trey questions for the last six months,” Kittle responded while shrugging his arms. “So, it is what it is. I’m just going to look at you guys and smile and say whatever I can.”

Kittle’s personality is always electrifying and magnetic. And even when the words show signs of frustration, he continues to handle himself in a way that doesn’t come off as confrontational or upset.

Even if he’s probably sick and tired of hearing all the chatter about a Garoppolo-Lance 49ers controversy.

Jimmy Garoppolo might be a George Kittle favorite, but Trey Lance is impressing

Garoppolo has received no shortage of praise from Kittle this offseason despite budding call-outs of the quarterback from media and fans alike.

So, while it might appear as if Kittle is solely in Jimmy G’s camp, Lance is already doing a lot to impress the Niners’ No. 1 offensive threat.

Earlier this month, speaking to KNBR 680 (h/t Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area), Kittle broke down just how promising Lance was looking during training camp:

"[Lance] has such a big arm and he can kind of make any throw. You guys have seen the highlights they post of him throwing off his back foot, 50 yards downfield, across his body. He has a big arm. He can make all those throws and effortlessly. He is a 21-year-old rookie who has a lot to figure out and he has a long way to go, we all do, but he’s playing at a high level right now."

Yes, it is possible Kittle can be supportive of both his quarterbacks, not needing to essentially “pick” which one is his favorite.

But Lance will probably wind up having to be Kittle’s favorite at some point, though, especially if Garoppolo’s time with San Francisco is now limited.
