The 49ers play their second preseason game of 2021 this Sunday against the Chargers, and Niner Noise has your betting info right here.

The San Francisco 49ers travel for the first time in 2021 with a preseason Week 2 matchup against another AFC West team, the Los Angeles Chargers, for a bout in Southern California on Sunday, Aug. 22 at SoFI Stadium.

The Niners are coming off a 19-16 exhibition loss last Saturday to the Kansas City Chiefs, which saw rookie quarterback Trey Lance make his pro-level debut.

With Lance needing more field time and questions whether or not he should see more snaps with the first-team offensive players, this matchup down south should provide fans with plenty of additional evidence for his development.

Even though Chargers second-year phenom quarterback Justin Herbert isn’t expected to play.

49ers vs. Chargers Odds preseason Week 1

Yes, you can bet on preseason matchups, and there are plenty of die-hard football fans who will.

WynnBET currently has San Francisco as minus-4.5 favorites for this exhibition contest, meaning the 49ers will have to win by at least five points to cover the spread or the Chargers have to either win or lose by four points or less to cover.

The moneyline is minus-110 for the Niners, meaning you’d have to bet $110 to win an additional $100.

The over/under for the game is 34.0.

49ers injury report vs. Chargers preseason Week 1

Preseason games are always difficult when it comes to assessing injuries, and the only players officially listed on the 49ers’ injury report list so far are as follows:

Active/Physically unable to perform

  • DB Tarvarius Moore (Achilles)
  • DB Jaquiski Tartt (toe)
  • RB Jeff Wilson Jr. (meniscus)

Reserve/Injured

  • DB Tony Jefferson (groin, hamstring)
  • OL Justin Skule (ACL)

Yet head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters following the Chiefs game that running back Austin Watkins suffered a broken foot and could miss six to eight weeks, while rookie guard Aaron Banks suffered a shoulder injury and will likely miss the rest of the preseason.

Defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw also is dealing with a shoulder injury and is expected to miss practice this week.

Whether or not Kinlaw is ready for Sunday’s game is yet to be determined.

49ers vs. Chargers Odds predictions Week 1

Again, preseason games are always odd to predict, given the bulk of the game features backups and a lot of reserves who won’t make either team’s regular-season roster.

But given the Niners won’t have to face Herbert but will likely field both quarterbacks Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance, one might figure San Francisco gets out to an early lead before turning the game over to one or both of the two backups, Josh Rosen and Nate Sudfeld.

Week 2 of the preseason might be the closest thing to a regular-season game for both squads, assuming Week 3 of the preseason is a final call for those last spots on the roster like it was before 2020.

From that vantage point, let’s go ahead and predict a 49ers exhibition win with a score of 21-17 with the Chargers covering.
