The 49ers opened their 2021 season and the Trey Lance era with a 19-16 preseason loss to the Chiefs, and Niner Noise overreacts to the action.

With the first game of the 2021 preseason in the books for the San Francisco 49ers, it is undoubtedly clear the Niners will go winless for their entire 2021 season.

After all, they lost their first game of preseason — a 19-16 last-minute loss to the visiting Kansas City Chiefs — that has to be the only reasonable takeaway from this game.

OK, silly overreaction aside, the beauty of preseason football is that it gives fans a chance to see rookies get their first game action, see hidden gems blossom on the field, and perhaps most importantly, see real live NFL football for the first time in half a year.

But as the first paragraph of this article attests, sometimes these snaps between players who might never see the field lead into outrageous hot takes and overreactions. It’s hard to remember in the moment the context of these plays and players and how even the raw speed of the game is slower in the preseason. There’s always useful information to glean from action, even preseason, but it requires looking past box scores and instant results.

That type of analysis is less fun, though, and this first game between the 49ers and the Chiefs gave a lot of moments to overreact to.

There was an offensive line without two of its best players, a rookie quarterback playing with starters against starters and then backups against backups, a defense without basically its entire starting unit going up against the best quarterback in the NFL, Patrick Mahomes, and so much more.

With all that said, let’s get underway with some overreactions from the preseason Week 1 action between San Francisco and Kansas City and see just how crazy the hot take really is.
