49ers roster: 4 biggest losers from first week of training camp
No. 2 49ers player: Aaron Banks, Guard
Aaron Banks was drafted in the second round to provide an upgrade to the 49ers’ interior offensive line, with an open spot ready for him at guard.
Unfortunately, Banks has had some teething problems in training camp so far and doesn’t look like a starter. He’s struggled especially in the one on one drills (which to be fair, is tough for an offensive lineman in general).
There’s no reason to panic, of course, as rookies often have to acclimate to the NFL, and for some, it’s a steeper learning curve than for others.
For Banks, however, it’s the difference between starting in Week 1 or sitting on the bench. Daniel Brunskill has been better in camp so far, and on merit alone, he should be starting.
On the positive side for Banks, he’ll have every chance to impress in the preseason games even if he has to do it with the backups. The battle to start at guard is still very much underway, and Banks is still very much in that particular positional battle.
For now, it’s just a matter of adjusting to the speed and physicality of the NFL.
