With 49ers training camp well and truly underway, some players have struggled in training camp and will need to improve in the coming weeks.
With the preseason shortened to make way for an extra week of the season, it’s never been tougher for the San Francisco 49ers to evaluate their roster for the season.
The majority of the attention has been on rookie quarterback Trey Lance and his very impressive start for the team, and the idea that perhaps a quarterback controversy is on the cards sooner rather than later.
So it’s not a surprise, perhaps, that more lost in the shuffle are the players who are fighting for starting spots or even roster spots that haven’t quite gotten rolling just yet.
With the preseason shorter than ever with only three preseason games instead of the four preseason game format known for so long, it’s tougher and tougher for players to make a good impression on the coaches.
The first week is perhaps the worst time to truly make a judgment on how players are faring, given players are just returning to the field and there have been no preseason games yet, but a bad start is still worse than a good start.
I know, brilliant observation there. But nevertheless, it can be the difference between having a spot on the roster and ending your NFL career there and then.
