49ers Winner No. 3: Safety Tavon Wilson

Another player who was on the fringes of the roster, veteran safety Tavon Wilson, has suddenly found himself at the forefront of potentially earning a starting job this season.

Or at least a primary backup role.

With starting strong safety Jaquiski Tartt nursing a toe injury and missing much of training camp thus far, Wilson has seen plenty of first-team reps and has been making the most of them.

Just take a look at what Sports Illustrated’s Grant Cohn had to say about Wilson’s impact:

"[Wilson] has started every practice at strong safety and played well. Today, he broke up a pass intended for George Kittle during 1-on-1 drills in the red zone, then nearly intercepted a pass from Jimmy Garoppolo during 11 on 11s. If Jaquiski Tartt never recovers from his turf toe injury, Wilson will replace him in the starting lineup. He made two nice stops against the run yesterday."

Wilson appears to be the clear winner for at least the immediate reserve player to Tartt, who has landed on season-ending injured reserve in three of his last four seasons.

It’s not good news for fellow safeties like Tony Jefferson and Marcell Harris, who could be the odd men out in what’s looking to be a much deeper crop at the position during camp.
