Stacking the Box: 49ers Trey Lance era is underway in The Bay

Niner Noise Podcast hosts Robert Morrison and Chris Wilson talked 49ers and Trey Lance with FanSided’s Stacking the Box Podcast, and you won’t want to miss it.

The San Francisco 49ers made it perfectly clear they were willing to move on from their starting quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo, when they made the blockbuster offseason move to trade up to No. 3 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft to grab North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance.

The Niners’ intent initially seemed to let Lance develop for a full year as a backup, largely based upon the fact the rookie had just one lone season as a starter in college, which could also serve to bolster Garoppolo’s trade value if he played well in what essentially would become a “swan song” season.

Well, it might not play out that way.

Lance has been more than impressive in training camp, and it’s not hard to find both local and national beat writers suggesting Lance is outperforming Garoppolo at every step of the way, perhaps to the point where head coach Kyle Shanahan considers starting Lance and jettisoning Garoppolo sooner than anticipated.

So, it’s no surprise that was a subject discussed when Niner Noise Podcast hosts Robert Morrison and Chris Wilson joined FanSided’s Stacking the Box Podcast host Mark Carmen this week to discuss all things Lance and Garoppolo.

Stacking the Box highlights Trey Lance’s potential impact on 49ers

Understandably, Lance versus Garoppolo was the high point of the discussion.

“I think he’ll probably get about as big a leash as he has the ability to use this season,” Morrison said of Garoppolo, whom Morrison feels won’t be traded away anytime soon. “But I can certainly see a situation similar to the Colin Kaepernick-Alex Smith type of thing where, if the door opens, Trey Lance could bust that thing wide open.”

Wilson didn’t think it would be prudent to trade Garoppolo right away either but admitted Shanahan would trade the quarterback away as soon as possible.
