Jimmy Garoppolo tossed another interception during 49ers training camp, which won’t quiet his doubters, yet that’s not the only news from Monday.

Those San Francisco 49ers fans thinking rookie Trey Lance should be the team’s starting quarterback in Week 1 instead of the veteran, Jimmy Garoppolo, likely got a bit more ammunition for their argument after Monday’s training camp practices outside Levi’s Stadium.

Already having tossed two interceptions during a practice over the weekend, Garoppolo attempted to find tight end Ross Dwelley in the red zone but was picked off by linebacker Fred Warner.

It was Warner’s second interception of Garoppolo during camp so far.

There are a few ways of looking at this. For starters, it hearkens back to the time when he tossed five consecutive interceptions during a 2019 training camp practice, only to go on that season to pass for nearly 4,000 yards en route to a Super Bowl appearance.

At the same time, though, Garoppolo has regularly struggled with turnovers, and the thought he’s taken a larger command of the offense in the wake of the Niners drafting Lance doesn’t seem to be the case.

Even though Lance was working with the second-string unit, his red-zone drills were far more effective, according to the Sacramento Bee’s Chris Biderman:

The other vantage point could suggest Garoppolo has and will continue to struggle with interceptions but is still in charge of starting duties at this point, relegating Lance to a developmental rookie to at least begin the regular season.

Both things could be equally true, especially with Lance tossing his first interception during camp on Monday, too.

Still, those wondering whether or not Garoppolo can hold onto his starting status for the long run just had a bit more evidence suggesting it’s more tenuous a hold than originally thought.

Let’s take a look at some other developments from Monday’s camp sessions.
