49ers training camp: 3 players who may tumble down depth chart
By Tee Epps
While training camp is the opportunity to rise, these three 49ers players could end up taking a fall if they’re outperformed this summer.
With NFL training camps set to open in about a week or so, many teams around the league are eager to evaluate their revamped squads.
As for the San Francisco 49ers, there are a number of players who may tumble down their depth chart at training camp.
Maybe this will be due to increased competition at the position. Or maybe others simply won’t be able to match their levels of expectation.
Tumbling down the depth chart is never a good idea, but it’s a fate that might befall these three Niners between now and Week 1.
No. 1 49ers Defensive Tackle Kentavius Street
A former fourth-round pick coming out of North Carolina State, as a defensive tackle, Kentavius Street has yet to fulfill expectations.
He suffered an unfortunate ACL injury during his 2018 pro day and was subsequently placed on the reserve/non-football injury list on Sept. 1 that year, which proved costly for Street because he didn’t fully recover until late in the 2019 season.
And that ultimately hindered his professional growth. Street was eventually activated from injured reserve his second season but only appeared in three games that year.
For those who were unfamiliar with Street’s playing ability, he didn’t help his case by leaving a sour first impression. He’s only played 18 games in two seasons and has a very pedestrian stat line to this point. With a total of nine solo tackles, one quarterback pressure and one QB hurry, Street knows he must show drastic improvements in order to prevent tumbling down the depth chart any further.
Or off of it.
