5 red-hot questions 49ers must answer at training camp

No. 1: Is 49ers cornerback depth going to be enough?
If everyone stays healthy, the 49ers’ cornerback room should be more than adequate heading into 2021.
But that’s a big “if.”

No. 1 boundary cornerback Jason Verrett appeared in six regular-season games between 2016 and 2019 before enjoying a relatively injury-free 2020 season. Granted, last year was impressive from Verrett’s perspective. But the injury reputation hasn’t exactly gone away.
Likewise, nickel cornerback K’Waun Williams missed eight games last year with injuries, too.
The depth behind these two is pretty thin and inexperienced. True, the Niners re-signed journeyman corner Dontae Johnson, who is capable of filling in on the boundary or over the slot in a pinch. But relying on him to start over a lengthy stretch could be a bit much.
San Francisco also used two NFL Draft picks on corners, grabbing Ambry Thomas in Round 3 and Deommodore Lenoir in Round 5.
Yet Thomas opted out of his senior season at Michigan, while Lenoir is probably more of a project piece at this early stage of his career rather than an upstart plug-and-play option.
If anything, the 49ers better bank on this group staying healthy.
Training camp practices officially kick off on Saturday, July 31.
