No. 2: Who assumes 49ers’ No. 3 wide receiver job?
The 49ers are set with their two top receivers, Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel.
But one of the bigger storylines this offseason is the void for the No. 3 receiving role. The Niners didn’t exactly do much during the NFL Draft to address this, aside from bringing aboard undrafted free-agent wideout Austin Watkins.
So, needless to say, this will be a vital question Kyle Shanahan has to answer.
Two candidates separated themselves during organized team activities: Mohamed Sanu and Jauan Jennings. While it was impressive to see them make gains toward being the tertiary wide receiver on the depth chart, the entire context will change once defensive backs are allowed to make contact.
It’s also possible some sleeper names, perhaps someone like Richie James, wind up making strides towards being a top candidate, too.
Currently, San Francisco has 11 remaining wide receivers vying for perhaps three or four spots on the 53-man roster behind Aiyuk and Samuel.
But given the prevalence and importance of a third wide receiver on the field, finding that No. 3 option is going to be crucial.
