49ers depth chart: 4 questions about 2021 quarterback room
By Peter Panacy
49ers QB Question No. 2: Will Josh Rosen beat out Nate Sudfeld for third-string job?
On the surface, it doesn’t seem like many would care too much about San Francisco’s No. 3 quarterbacking job.
But considering the 49ers have had to use three different quarterbacks in two of the last three years, it probably should be an important training camp battle.
Right now, there are two signal-callers vying for this role: Nate Sudfeld and Josh Rosen.
Sudfeld, the former Philadelphia Eagles backup who worked under now-Niners quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello and has guaranteed money attached to his one-year contract, seems to have the upper hand in those departments.
Yet Rosen, the 2018 No. 10 overall draft pick, is probably fighting for his NFL career at this point after flaming out with every team he’s been with since being drafted.
Rosen is only 24 years old, so there’s an argument he’s still capable of being labeled as “having potential” despite his previous flameouts. One might think he just needs the right situation and context, and perhaps landing the third-string job behind Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance, however that order pans out, might be the best thing for him.
But what if San Francisco moves on from Garoppolo sooner than anticipated? Could that prompt both Rosen and Sudfeld to make the roster?
