49ers training camp: 1 key battle to watch at each position

49ers training camp battle: Starting running back
Yes, it’s one of those other positions fully up for grabs during training camp.
It might not matter too much, though, as head coach Kyle Shanahan doesn’t typically rely on a “starting” running back to shoulder the bulk of the offensive load on the ground. Simply put, just because you start, it doesn’t automatically mean you’re going to get the lion’s share of touches during the game.
Still, Shanahan could implement a change of philosophy here after San Francisco used a third-round draft pick on Ohio State running back Trey Sermon, who looks the part of a bell-cow running back and figures to take a lot of snaps away from the incumbent RB1, Raheem Mostert.

While it’s still true that it won’t matter whether or not Sermon is starting games, especially if Mostert is getting the bulk of carries while using his home-run speed in the second half, it’s possible Sermon winds up being the player to watch on the ground.
Especially in the wake of Mostert’s own injury history and concerns.
49ers training camp will also help reveal the depth behind both Sermon and Mostert, which will be important.
But figuring out who not only starts between these two high-profile tailbacks and, perhaps more importantly, who winds up being the primary ball-carrier in 2021 will be a major storyline to watch.
