49ers Position No. 3: Cornerback

On paper, it would appear as if the Niners are set with their starting trio of cornerbacks: Jason Verrett, K’Waun Williams and Emmanuel Moseley.

But Moseley might be a player who’d be tabbed as being in danger of losing a starting job after training camp, especially in the wake of San Francisco adding two rookie cornerbacks during the draft, Michigan‘s Ambry Thomas and Oregon‘s Deommodore Lenoir.

Lenoir, the fifth-round pick, is probably tabbed early for special teams duties and as a backup. But Thomas, the Round 3 selection who opted out in 2020 and could have been a second-round pick if he hadn’t, might be capable of challenging Moseley for the No. 2 boundary cornerback role opposite Verrett.

Ever since the halfway point in 2019, Moseley has found himself bouncing back and forth from the starting lineup, which is a pretty clear indicator the 49ers aren’t quite sold on automatically handing him a first-string role entering 2021.

True, Moseley might have the edge over the younger, less-experienced Thomas. But if Thomas winds up impressing enough during camp, it wouldn’t be overly shocking to see the rookie get the nod, while Moseley reverts back into a support role.
